How do you study the Bible?
My husband is one of those people who can read the Bible like it’s a fantastic novel. He’s able to engage and intrigued from start to finish. He’s read through the Bible multiple times, and the knowledge he has stored in that big ole’ head is unreal.
For me, the way my brain is set up, I CAN’T! I’ve spent many years as a believer really struggling with reading my Bible. Absorbing and connecting the dots feels impossible at times. Whenever I have to speak publicly or lead a small group at church, I’m fine. However, this past year, I’ve really wanted to find the joy of just picking up the Bible to study. For myself and for my personal growth.
I’ve tried a lot of different methods, and up until a few months ago, I still hadn’t found my groove. I shared this briefly on my Instagram stories and received a lot of messages from people in similar struggles. So I thought it was important to share it on the blog as well.
I love buying bible study plans/lessons and get a lot out of that. However, I really wanted to get to a place in my reading where I could just pick up my Bible and process what I’m reading.
Over a year ago, I stumbled upon Amy Hale’s Instagram page and loved the content. I hit a season in my life where I wasn’t reading at all. Life gets busy and before you know it weeks and even months can pass by, and you haven’t spent any intimate time with God. I actually decided to unfollow her page because I felt convicted about not reading every time I saw one of her posts. Petty, I know, LOL.
Anyway, Amy has an incredible method for reading the bible that has completely transformed my time in the Word. I’ve linked her “How To Highlight” video below, it’s definitely worth watching. If you’re a visual person and need a way to interact with the text while you read, I promise, this is the way to go.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
BIBLE: We’re fortunate to live in a time where so many translations are available to us. However, when it comes to studying, I really enjoy using the:
Tyndale, Life Application Study Bible in the New Living Translation.
HIGHLIGHTERS: I just have basic highlighters that I purchased at Target, but The Daily Grace Co. has some great sets that are specifically for highlighting on those thin Bible pages.

HIGHLIGHTER LIST: You’ll need to create a guide or key for the various highlighter colors. Watch Amy’s video for more clarification on this:
